By the score of 17 to 0 the Washburn football team was defeated by the fast squad from the College of Emporia on the local field yesterday. The game was all for the visitors from the start and they seemed to be able to score almost at will. Their line was lighter than the Ichabod's but what they lacked in weight they made up in speed. Several times in the game the Blue squad was held for downs and the visitors got the ball. The Preachers' goal was threatened only once and that in the last few minutes of play, when Washburn forced the ball to their 8-yard line. The game was called at 4:56 with the ball on Emporia's 3-yard line.
Smiley started the game by kicking off 6O yards. Emporia returned 10 yards and gained 25 yards through the line. Punts were exchanged and Emporia received a Penalty of 16 yards for pushing. An attempt was made by the visitors for a field goal, but it failed and the ball went into scrimmage on the 25-yard line. in Washburn's possession. Smiley kicked off and Washburn secured the ball on her thirty yard line. On a fumble the visitors secured the pigskin and worked the forward pass for 25 yards. At this point Coach Driver jerked Cowgill and sent Bowman in at end. A forward pass failed for Emporia and Smiley punted. Punts were again exchanged and it was Emporia's ball. Emporia pushed the ball to the 5-yard line, but the Ichabods rallied and held them for downs. Smiley punted 35 yards and the Preachers returned 20 yards. A line buck sent Engle, left halfback, over the line for a touchdown. Schabinger kicked goal and the score was Emporia 6, Washburn 0. The first quarter ended with the ball in Emporia's possession.
SECOND QUARTER.
Emporia punted 35 yards and the Blue Warriors began a steady march down the field. A series of line plunges by Burkhart, Titus and McIntyre made Washburn23 yards in five downs. Washburn was penalized 15 yards for holding and McIntyre evened up by a plunge through the line for 25 yards. Emporia got the ball on downs and worked the forward pass for 25 yards. Emporia was penalized 15 yards for holding. Titus was injured and Bishop sent in as tackle. Emporia punted and it was Washburn's ball on the 40-yard line, Smiley made an end run for 25 yards. Bishop was sent out of the game for roughness and N. Rogers was shifted to tackle, Palmer to guard, and Barrett sent in as center. Emporia broke up a forward pass for the Ichabods and Wills, right end, got away on a 60-yard run for a touchdown; Schabinger failed to kick goal and the score was 11 to 0 for Emporia at the end of the first half.
THIRD QUARTER

Emporia kicked off 35 yards and Smiley returned 20 yards. Washburn lost the ball on a fumble and Schabinger punted and recovered the ball on Washburn's 20-yard line. The Ichabods made a touchback and the ball went into play on the 25-yard line. Washburn was penalized 16 yards for stiff-arming. FOURTH QUARTER

Coach Driver chanted the Blue line again at the opening of the last quarter, sending Titus in as tackle. Crumbine at the quarter and Smiley at end taking Cowgill out of the game. Emporia started the quarter by punting and recovering the ball on Washburn's 5-yard line. Emporia was penalized 5 yards for three men in motion. An attempt to drop-kick goal failed for the Preachers and Washburn had the ball on her 25-yard line. Punts were exchanged and Washburn was held for downs. Line bucks failed to push the pigskin over the visitors' goal and the game ended with the ball on Emporia's 3-yard line. The final score was College of Emporia 17, Washburn 0.
Washburn seemed to be out classed in the game and the Blue warriors did not seem to be able to work together. Emporia was able to go around the ends almost at will and the Blue line failed to hold in emergencies. The Ichabods pulled off several good passes, but they were not able to work them systematically and usually lost the ball on a fumble.  Smiley was the star of the game and played a fast game, doing sensational tackling.
Coach Hargiss' football machine worked smoothly throughout entire game and the work of Schabinger at quarter had a great deal to do with the size of the score for the Preachers.
"Our men have been troubled with boils considerably," said Coach Hargiss of the College of Emporia, "but I think the team is now in good shape. We are going into the game to win."  After the game was finished he said: "The game came out as we expected and I think that the score would have been considerably larger if the field had been dry."
