Letter from the US Air Force
DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE
HEADQUARTERS UNITED STATES AIR FORCE
WASHINGTON 25. D. C.
13 January 1960
Mr. William Hargiss
State Office Building
Room 1129 So.
Topeka, Kansas
Dear Bill:
Thanks for the Xmas card. That was very nice. On 24 December,
I loaded my family in the car and took a two-week vacation to North Carolina and
Florida. Just returned to work Monday and find myself behind in my work.
One thing that I'm anxious to get rolling as soon as possible
is the training of our Olympic track and field athletes. For your information, I
just learned that Rafer Johnson is presently in the Air Force at Lackland AFB, Texas,
so I have already initiated action to have him reassigned to Oxnard Air Force Base,
California.
I sure hope this letter finds you in real good health and
if you'll let me know if and when you can go to Oxnard to train and coach these
boys, I'll make the final arrangements. I have already been assured that you will
have quarters on the base and officer privileges at the club, etc. I really think
you'll enjoy every bit of it Bill as well as help these airmen qualify as members
of the Olympic Team.
Your salary again will be $125.00 per week, with an additional
$10.00 per day when away from Oxnard AFB, for meets, etc.
I would greatly appreciate your calling me collect at Washington,
D.C., OXford 69583 or OXford 69593 as soon as possible in order that we can finalize
our plans for this program.
Give Fran my regards and again I hope this letter finds
you in good health again.
Sincerely,
C. E. ALLARD, Lt Colonel, USAF
