Will Honor Bill Hargiss At Fort Hays Grid Clinic

     HAYS — Eighteen high school football coaches will join Otto Unruh, the dean of Kansas football coaches now at Bethel college, and Ralph Johnson, athletic trainer at Fort Hays State college, for the 9th annual Football Coaching Clinic July 18-20 at FHS.
     An added attraction of the clinic will be the honoring of veteran football and track coach H. W. (Bill ) Hargiss. For 28 years Hargiss coached football, track and basketball at Marion high school, College of Emporia, the Kansas State Teachers college, Emporia, Oregon State college and the University of Kansas. He also played one year of professional football with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Hargiss compiled a won lost-tied mark of 124-47-9.

     He was known as the first football coach to use a lineman for running interference (C of E, 1910); first to use the forward pass as a definite offensive play, (C of E, 1910; first to use rhythm count as charging signal, (C of E, 1912);
first to use huddle in football (offense, 1919, Oregon State) (defense, 1923, Emporia State Teachers)
; and the first track coach to use metal vaulting pole.
     Two of Hargiss' former students will recall working for the head mentor. Fran Welch, former football player and long-time track coach at Emporia State, and Glenn Cunningham, former world mile record holder at KU, will speak in honor of Hargiss. Another former student, Carrie Smith, now athletic director at Pittsburg State college, will be in attendance.
     The reception honoring Hargiss will be at 8 pm July 18 at the Holiday Inn.
