Dear Lige:
Your communication on the occasion of the dedication of Welch Stadium helped
to make November 11 1960, a most memorable day in my life. As I reflect on this
occasion, I feel very humble and inadequate to express my sincere appreciation to
the many people who made this great honor possible.
I am indebted to a great many people: first, to my wife and children who have
been an inspiration to me; to my coach, Bill
Hargiss, and the football
squad of 1927 for their recommendation; to President Thomas W. Butcher and the members
of the Athletic Board of 1923 for selecting me to be the football and track coach,
and the Athletic Director; to the wonderful group of young men with whom it has
been my privilege to work these many years; to the loyal staff of assistants in
the department; to an understanding and appreciative faculty, student body, and
alumni; and especially to President John E. King and the members of the Kansas
Board of Regents who have recognized some merit in what has
been accomplished.
I an grateful for the cooperation of everyone who has helped to make our program
respectable. It is my hope that policies which have made our program successful
will continue to guide us in the years ahead, adding impetus to an expanding program
of health, physical education, and recreation for all students in our college.
I have enjoyed my association with you and value your friendship.
Yours sincerely,
F. G. Welch
Professor of Physical Education
and Head Track Coach
