Hall of Fame Gallery Will Be Dedicated
Ceremony Set Thursday at Fairgrounds
Sept. 14, 1961
The All-Sports Hall of Fame Gallery,
in which the original 19 honorees will be enshrined, will be dedicated at a ceremony
Thursday at 11 a.m.
The Gallery is located in the new Exhibition Center auditorium
at the northwest corner of the Mid America Fairgrounds. Biographical material, photographs
and plaques commemorating the feats of the 19 charter members of the Hall of Fame
will be placed in a huge case.
The exhibit will be open to the public permanently following
the dedication, E. A. Thomas, chairman, said. Participating in the ceremony will
be Lt. Gov. Harold Chase and members of the Kansas All-Sports Hall of Fame, Inc.,
board of directors.
F. W. (Bus) Boyd, Mankato, president of the group, will
preside. Clyde Reed, Parsons publisher, vice president, will deliver a talk. Other
Hall of Fame directors include Thomas, secretary-treasurer, Topeka; Hugo T. Wedell
and Ray Dumont, Wichita; Fred Mendell, Hutchinson; Ray Evans, Kansas City; Maurice
Fager and Jack Quinlan, Topeka, and H. B. Lee, Manhattan.
Dedication of the permanent home for the Hall of Fame will
culminate a move started June 1, 1960. At that time, the Hall of Fame was approved
as a Centennial year project and work was started screening hundreds of state greats
who might qualify.
The work was spearheaded by Thomas, former Kansas State
high school activities association commissioner. His group collected research material
which has been made available to the State Historical Society.
Thomas, incidentally, was one of the first 19 selected
by a committee of 14 to be charter members in the Hall of Fame. These 19 were announced
at a Centennial All-Sports banquet in Wichita on April 7.
Additional sports greats will be added to the Hall of Fame
annually. A selection committee will be formed to recommend to the Board of Directors,
which will make the final decision.
Those who served on the board selecting the first 19 members
were Don Pierce, Paul De Weese, Dick Snider, Fred Mendell, E. A. Thomas, Elon Torrance,
Ray Dumont, Pete Lightner, Wedell, Rolla Clymer, Carl Kopelk and Bus Boyd.
