Notes for George HARGASE

The father of George may have been Louis, who is said to have come from
Normandy (France), but earlier family was in Denmark.

Though Normandy is part of France, it was actually a Danish colony in France
that was established by an agreement between Rollo (a Danish viking) and
Charles III of France in the year 911, establishing the Duchy of Normandy that
was ruled almost autonomously by Rollo and his descendants for many
generations. The Duchy of Normandy was officially dis-established around 1400,
and power reverted to the King of France. However, the majority of the
inhabitants would have still been Danes even into the 16th century. This would
mean there would still be family ties between Denmark and Normandy.

Therefore, it is likely that even though Louis may have come from Normandy, he
would have been of Danish descent.

George Hargase was born in 1590/91.1 He was baptized in 1590/91 at St Mary
Magdalene, Old Fish St, London, England.1
