On June 13, 1867, August Klemme was united in marriage to Augusta Fleuerhahn, who was born in Hanover, Germany, but came to the U.S. when she was about two 1/2 years old. To this marriage, there were born eight children, six boys and two girls, as follows: George, Henry (my father), Ravena, Louis, August, Martin, William, and Sylvia My own father had trouble that way. his name was Henry Louis Klemme and his brother's name was Louis Henry Klemme. They were always getting things mixed up. Finally, my father started signing his name Hy Klemme and continued to do so the rest of his life. Letter from Heide Geary August Klemme - children: George, Henry, Ravenna, Louis, August, Martin, William, Sylvia August was living with his sister Caroline and husband Henry ALTENTHAL. The census for 1860 shows both of those.
Christian Klemme emmigrated from Brunswick, Germany, in the late 1830's or early 40's. He was a tailor by trade, but soon settled on a farm near Jackson, Mo. August Klemme (my grandfather) the sixth child, was born on this farm on April 1 1846. He served during the last two years of the Civil War. Christian Klemme died on what was called the Altenthal farm (Hoble Township) near Jackson, about a week before Christmas of 1877. He was living with his son, August, his wife having passed away several years previously. Christian Klemme emmigrated from Brunswick, Germany, in the late 1830's or early 40's. The practice of giving children two or more names, often confuses one in tracing old records, for they change from one name to another. Your grandmother has gone by many names. For instance, she is listed as "Johanna Catherine Wilhelminia Klemme" on the ship list that the Captain of the ship turned over to the Port Authority upon landing in New Orleans. The Port Authority lists her just as Johanna Klemme. The 1850 census of Cape Girardeau County lists her as Hannah Klemme. Others called her Anna or Annie. My own father had trouble that way. his name was Henry Louis Klemme and his brother's name was Louis Henry Klemme. They were always getting things mixed up. One note stated- "William Oberheide had two sons, Martin and Willie. The father was a miller

William Oberheide was united in marriage to Johanna Klemme on April 11, 1863 in Cape Girardeau. The record shows that the marriage ceremony was performed by George, or G.H., Cramer, a justice of the peace. It was as a member of George Cramer's household that she had resided since the age of twelve. However, the entry for G. H. Cramer in 1860 does not have Anna living there. She would have been 17 and perhaps went to work elsewhere. Johanna remained a widow and never married again. The youngest son, Martin, never married and continued to live with his mother until her death on July 15, 1924, at the age of eighty. According to my Aunt Sylvia, her Aunt Johanna, or "Aunt Hannah", as she always referred to her, kept the most beautiful flower garden in the city of Cape Girardeau. She was always outside working with her flowers

Uncle Bill (William) was married to Marie Lance. She and Uncle Bill had no children. They lived modestly in a small home for their entire life. Aunt Marie did go in to the Lutheran Home nursing home in her later years. He sold uniforms (school band uniforms, etc,) and novelty items, such as ink pens with a business name on them, key chains, etc. for Newton Manufacturing. He may have had other jobs early on, but I dont know what he did then. Jane Dunklin Stahly
