     Emporia, Kas. — Homer W. (Bill) Hargiss, a legend in Emporia State's sports history, was honored by friends and associates at a recognition dinner at Emporia State college last night.
     Hargiss, 83, coached football at Marion (Kas.) high school, the College of Emporia, Oregon State, Kansas university and Emporia State He was also athletic director at Emporia State.
     Emery Cox, now director of the Wichita board of park commissioners and a former player under Hargiss. introduced the special guests among the 150 persons in attendance. Among the speakers were two former Emporia State coaches, E. D. (Gus) Fish and Fran Welch.  Fish cited memories of his association with Hargiss and Welch ended the speeches with a salute to the Bald Eagle.
    Carne Smith, athletic director at Pittsburg State, recalled the grid days of Hargiss at Kansas University.
     Hargiss was presented the distinguished alumni award by Dr. J. J. Weigand, president of the alumni association at Emporia State.
     "This banquet started through the efforts of some of Bill's former players," said Welch. "He coached some tremendous athletes, including Glenn Cunningham and Jim Bausch, and everyone associated with Bill is very proud tonight."
     Hargiss presently resides in Topeka where he lives with his daughter, Genevieve, a professor at K. U.
