Bill Hargis, Ex-KU Coach, Dies at
91

LAWRENCE, Kan.—H. W. "Bill" Hargiss, 91, Lawrence, former football and track coach
at the University of Kansas, died Sunday at a hospital here.
Mr. Hargiss was football coach at KU from 1928 to 1932.
The Jayhawks compiled a 18-16-2 record over the four seasons. His best season was
in 1930, when the team won six and lost two.
He was named head track coach at the university in 1933
and directed the Kansas Relays during his 10 years in that position.
Mr. Hargiss served as president of the Missouri Valley
Association of Amateur Athletic Union from 1940 to 1942 and was a coach for the
Brooklyn Dodgers football team in 1942.
He was graduated from the Kansas Normal School, Emporia,
in 1909 after playing fullback on the football team four years.
He later was director of athletics and football, basketball
and track coach at the school, then the Kansas State Teachers College. He also served
as athletic director and coach at Oregon State Agricultural College, Corvallis,
before going to KU.
He was director of recreation at the Pratt and Whitney
Co. plant in Kansas City, Kansas, and later served in the Army during World War
II. He was born in Cherokee County, Kan., and had lived in Lawrence most of his
life.
He leaves a son, Willard Clarke Hargiss. Pittsburgh; two
daughters, Dr. Genevieve F. Hargiss of the borne, and Mrs. Shirley Hargiss Oberheide,
St. Louis; a brother, Meade T. Hargiss, Sun City, Ariz.; a sister. Mrs. Vetra Beringer,
Salina, Kan., and six grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Maplewood
Cemetery, Emporia. Friends ma y call after 8 a.m. today at the Rumsey Chapel, Lawrence.
