Mr. H. W. (Bill) Hargiss
c/o Fran Welch
1714 Rural Street
Emporia, Kansas

Bill, it is with great regret that I cannot be with you tonight at the Testimonial Dinner given in your honor.

For a long time, I have had a business appointment which calls for a fishing trip to Canada and when I later learned of this dinner for you, I gave thought to cancelling the appointment but other forces prevailed. I know the evening will be enjoyable and I am only hoping you will be allowed to spend some time spinning some of your yarns about the glorious past.

Needless to say, I have always admired your ability in the sport world, but ranking with your abilities are the qualities of a keen mind and a great sense of humor. The laughs we have had together and the serious condemnation of others are cherished memories. My brother, Fen, always enjoyed your bass singing, though I must say, we have not had that opportunity -- perhaps a song will burst out in some future meeting.

I hope the good Lord above continues to give you mental and physical health so that you can be around for all of us to enjoy, many years to come.

With fondest memories of the past, and expectant hopes for more fun in the future, I remain your friend,

Dana Durand
