Norfolk, Virginia Dear Bill:
I wish it were possible for ms to come to
Kansas later this month when your associates and former athletes pause to pay honor
to you. Certainly, I was one of those inspired and greatly influenced by your leadership
during the 1936-39 years.
It's been a long while, Bill, since I have seen you. Occasionally,
I get out that way to see my mother who still lives in Junction City. On such occasions,
I normally visit with Dana in Kansas City and he brings me up to date on most of
my old friends such as yourself, Phog Allen,
Henry Shenk and others. I have missed seeing all of you through the
years
but the work I followed just didn't permit too many visits. As you probably recall, I remained in the marine Corps at
the end of World War II as a regular officer. After various overseas and U.S. assignments,
I retired in 1963 after 23 years service. We settled in Norfolk, Virginia,
where we already had a number of friends
and where I have worked since
1963 in the concrete, sand, and gravel business. Incidentally,
each of our two sons ran the cross-country, mile and
two mile in high school. They each ran the mile
in less than 4:40 minutes which was excellent high school time in my day, but of
course is not too good currently. One has now finished college, is married and has
a baby girl. The other is a
sophomore at our local university - Old Dominion University
here in Norfolk
Many thanks for your
help and guidance thirty years ago. What little success I may have had in life to
date, I owe to men like yourself who provided a good foundation for the adversities
we all must face.
With deep admiration,
Fen Durand
